Filters

Short answer - yes, both of our filter candle options reduce levels of forever chemicals (PFOA and PFOS). We are currently awaiting official test results from our suppliers - Royal Doulton and UltraCeram regarding the exact percentage filtration rate of forever chemicals.

Both suppliers are extremely conscious of only releasing test results to the public that are 100% substantiated and because of this are taking a conservative approach around any new forever chemical reports.

What we do know, and is confirmed from multiple sources, is that one of the most effective ways to reduce forever chemicals like PFOA and PFOS is by filtering through a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter process - which both our Standard and Advanced filters do.

Please see below a list of credible sources that reference the granular activated carbon filtration process as the most of if not one of the most effective ways to reduce forever chemicals.

Removing PFAS from public water systems will cost billions and take time – here are ways you can filter out harmful ‘forever chemicals’ at home

Forever Chemicals in Australian Tap Water: What are they & how do we remove them?

Reducing PFAS in Drinking Water with Treatment Technologies

It’s important to note that there are currently over 14,000 recorded ‘forever chemicals’ in circulation, with the two most present being PFOA and PFOS. The sheer number of chemicals has made the testing process extremely lengthy and more extensive than anticipated. As soon as we have updated test results from both our suppliers we will be making that information available. Please contact our team at info@kynandfolk.com if you have any further questions.

Water is essential for feeling energised, rehydrating your body and supporting your body's many processes.

Please refer to our filtration page for further information.

There are many other filter candles that are compatible with our vessels. Please contact our team at info@kynandfolk.com to see if your preferred filter candle is compatible.

To ensure the efficacy and longevity of your filter candle, we recommend cleaning it every 2 months, when the water flow becomes reduced or when your filter becomes visibly dirty (whichever comes first). You may need to clean your water filter more frequently if your water source is a tank, dam or bore water.

To clean your filter candle, first remove it from your vessel by undoing the nut from underneath. Scrape the surface with a clean scouring pad or soft brush underneath running water until the white ceramic material becomes visible again. Please be mindful not to use soaps or detergents when cleaning your filter candle.

To maintain the efficacy and performance of your ceramic water filter, we recommend replacing your filter candle periodically.

Replacement timing will depend on the quality of the local water conditions and frequency of use. Under average conditions and if cleaned regularly, your filter will provide filtration for 6 to 12 months or 2000 litres. After this stage, the activated carbon becomes too saturated and will no longer function optimally.

Replacement filter candles can be found here.

Ceramics

Our ceramics are designed with durability and daily use in mind. However, to ensure the lifetime of your vessel we recommend that you completely disassemble your Kyn & Folk system and wash all parts every few months. Please be mindful to only use a clean cloth with no soaps or detergents when cleaning your ceramics. This will prolong the longevity of your vessel and ensure it will maintain its integrity.

Each of our stoneware vessels is designed in Northern NSW, Australia and created by hand with the highest level of craftsmanship by our partners in Vietnam, where we collaborate closely with a team of skilled artisans and intergenerational craftspeople.

The Vietnamese province of Dong Nai where our ceramics are crafted is built up of many small family-run pottery workshops and is renowned for its high-quality pottery and skilled artisans.

Natural variations between ceramics reflect the inevitable human touch each vessel receives during the making process and should be embraced as a hallmark of true craftsmanship.

Please note:

  • Natural Variations – Differences in glaze color, texture, and finish occur naturally due to the hand-finishing process. No two pieces are exactly alike.

  • Kiln Effects – The position of each ceramic in our kiln may influence glaze reactions, leading to slight variations in color and consistency.

  • Screen Display Differences – Colors may appear differently depending on the screen settings of your phone, tablet, or computer.

  • Minor Surface Imperfections – Handmade ceramics may feature subtle marks, indentations, or speckling from the crafting and firing process. These do not compromise quality or function.

  • Dimensional Variations – While we strive for consistency, slight differences in size and volume may occur due to hand-thrown or hand-molded techniques.

  • Glaze Characteristics – Some pieces may exhibit crackling (crazing), matte or glossy patches, or natural glaze pooling. These effects are a normal part of ceramic glazing and do not indicate defects.

  • Care Instructions – To maintain longevity, we recommend hand washing over dishwashing, as harsh detergents or high temperatures may affect the glaze over time.

Troubleshooting

A. 99% of the time leaking from the vessel is a sign that your tap needs to be tightened. You will need to empty the vessel and holding the nut on the inside tighten the tap by at least one full turn clockwise until it is watertight.

B. If there is water dripping from the spout of the tap please contact us at info@kynandfolk.com to arrange for a replacement part to be sent to you within 72 hours of delivery.

Each new filter candle will need to be flushed out before consumption. To do this, first, submerge/soak the new filter candle in a cup of water for 15 minutes. Then, run the filter candle under flowing water, gently scrubbing with a clean soft brush or scouring pad. Once installed, dispose of the first 2-6 litres of filtered water.

Often described as fishy, chalky or chemically, the funny taste sometimes experienced with a brand-new filter candle is a result of the initial degasification process of the media inside the ceramic filter candle. After being flushed properly, this taste will dissipate. This process is usually quite quick but can take up to a few days.

It is not uncommon for small black specks of activated carbon to appear on the bottom of the vessel in the initial days of operation. This material is harmless and will disappear with use.
